Objectives £º This study aimed to evaluate how drinking during pregnancy affected women¡¯s pregnancy weight gain and neonatal birthweights.
Methods £º We gave 1,000 pregnant women self-administered questionnaires asking about their demographic
characteristics and alcohol use histories. The questionnaire used the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT-C). After 406 participants¡¯ deliveries, we examined medical records of each participant and her baby.
Results £º Women who did drink during pregnancy showed a significant difference in pregnancy weight gain from those who did not drink, but we found no differences in the weights of their respective neonates.
Conclusion : Pregnancy weight gain is one of the most important predictors of intra-uterine growth retardation. In our study, women drinking during their pregnancies failed to gain sufficient weight. However, the study did not prove drinking during pregnancy had a negative effect on neonatal weight. Further study is needed.
